YUMANIZUMU: IS IN TO YOU EXHIBITION PREVIEW AND INTERVIEW

We popped into the /A WORD OF ART Gallery yesterday afternoon to catch up with artist in-residence, Yumanizumu from Tokyo, who is preparing his exhibition – Is In To You, which opens tomorrow night at the /AWOA gallery.

The exhibition will consist of a large, brand new body of work including drawings, sculptures, paintings and installations all made during his 2 month residency in South Africa.

How has your experience of making art in South Africa been?
It’s all new so I try and never give up.

Your work has a very stark, graphic quality to it. What inspires this?
Many primitive and cultural influences, and travels.

Has the translation of your work from your background in studio painting to street murals been difficult?
Not difficult, because style is same. Its been exciting.

Can you tell us a little bit more about your tattoos.
Tattoo give me big energy. so It`s my treasure

What type of work can we expect from “Is In To You”?
I wanna give everybody my Japanese style.
