JOURNEY THROUGH SOUTH AFRICA: DAY 13 -15
on January 24, 2012
A group of skateboarders from Germany and South Africa made an unusual and long journey through the country. Together with Revolution, they collected boards, shoes and clothing to hand-out to kids within the poorer areas between Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Fourteen days of driving and over 4000 km with Justus Kotzé, Niklas Speer von Cappeln, Louis Taubert, photographers Andrea de Souto and Sam Clark. Cinematographer Lucas Fiederling documented the journey, the countryside and of course the skateboarding…
Day 13: After enyoing a really nice breakfast with the crew and family we left for our next destination, Soweto.
Niklas and Justus giving some skate-lessons to the kids in Soweto.
And if they couldn’t follow the Lessons, they would skate in their own style.
Day 14: The long road back to Cape Town. Driving through the desert.
And driving at night.
Funny self made Volcom Sticker
Day 15: Still driving through the desert. Never forget to stay BIRDSNAKE!
An exhausted crew. It was a really cool trip with lots of experiences and good times. We can say we saw “The World In One Country”. Special thanks to Revolution for making it happen!
We’ll be recapping all the action from the Journey Through South Africa tomorrow, so make sure you drop in. If you missed the previous installments you can check them out here, here, here aaaaannnnnnd here.
JOURNEY THROUGH SOUTH AFRICA: DAY 10-12

Fourteen days of driving and over 4000 km with Justus Kotzé, Niklas Speer von Cappeln, Louis Taubert, photographers Andrea de Souto and Sam Clark. Cinematographer Lucas Fiederling documented the journey, the countryside and of course the skateboarding…
Day 10: Our next stop was the Indigo Skatecamp. We didn’t know that Indigo is such an amazing place to hang out. All the locals where really nice, helped us out with what we need and braaied like champs!
The view from far.
Local kid skating the steep ass pool
We were lucky to leave to Pretoria with wheels.
Day 11: From Durban we went straight to Pretoria. Capturing Lucas…
…and with all the other Birdsnakes on the road.
We finally got to Pretoria. A pretty long drive. But we had a really nice place to stay at Hartmut’s. (A German skater who lives in Pretoria). A cool studio with coaches, some beds and a mini ramp.
Day 12: We woke up the next morning to the sound of Hartmut’s house-alarm going off. 5 guys broke into the house, luckily not in the studio, but unfortunately in our car. Andreas equipment, Hartmut’s house and car keys and laptops got stolen. REALLY SHIT! But at least everyone was safe, because Hartmut’s father saw the guys running away with guns…The only thing you can do after such an experience is to go skate! And thats what we did. Louis feeble pop out.
Niklas filming a line with Lucas.
Drop in tomorrow for more action from the Journey Through South Africa! If you missed the previous installments you can check them out here, here and here.
JOURNEY THROUGH AFRICA: DAY 7 – 9

Day 7: Coffee Bay. The Rain didn’t want us to leave Coffee Bay.
Sam chilling with a new friend.
So everyone decided to stay another night and enjoy a really good party!
The Justus show.
Day 8: Staying another night was definitely a good choice. We wouldn’t have made it, because the roads had been flooded.
Louis enjoying sleeping with his pillow.
Before the Birdsnakes…
…and the Nikdeer hit the road to Durban.
Day 9: Durban!
We arrived safely!
Even though Justus wasn’t keen to drive anymore.
We had a fun skate at Durban’s beachfront skatepark. Switching jobs – while cinematographer Lucas and photographer Sam kill the transitions.
Be sure to check back tomorrow for more action and photos from The Journey Through South Africa…If you missed Day 1 to 3, you can check it out here and you can see the action from Days 4 to 6 over here.

Day 4: Leaving to Jeffrey’s Bay…Lucas being stoked on ostriches. Probably a German thing.
Niklas and Lucas on a bridge. Crazy thing was, Niklas sat on the edge of the bridge 5 minutes later!
An exhausted crew after a long day of driving!
Day 5: Jeffreys Bay is definitely a different thing to all the places we’ve seen so far. A surfer’s paradise, bars and a really nice campsite on the beach.
Louis saw a snake on the beach. Looked quite funny because it was a bird. BIRDSNAKE!
…after skating the kickerspot, Niklas did the craziest downhill line we’ve seen!
Our Successful day in Jeffreys Bay ended with a ditch session. Louis with a FS Flip. Stay Birdsnake!
Day 6: On our way to the Transkei. A long day of driving awaited us…
…shitty roads, animals on the streets and gnarly Taxi Drivers.
…on the road, waiting for (TLL) Time-lapsing Lucas.
BOMVU! Props to the drivers for bringing us safely to Coffee Bay
Be sure to check back tomorrow for more action and photos from The Journey Through South Africa…If you missed Day 1 to 3, you can check it out here.

Scottsdean crew.
This little dude gets some help from Niklas.
Justus and Louis giving some skate lessons… not too easy!
Justus and the van. The plan was to drive as far as we can…We didn’t make it too far, but it was definitely a good day of skating.
First stop, Somerset West. Not even an half an hour away from Cape Town.
Niklas backtailing it in Caledon.
No one really knew that Mosselbay is such a good place to skate. We got stuck and spent the whole day skating rad spots over there….After a whole day of skating everyone was pretty mellow. we built up the tent and had a really funny night.
Be sure to check back tomorrow for more action and photos from The Journey Through South Africa…
WESLEY VAN EEDEN BLOG
on January 18, 2012
This weekend I got to show my work at Word of Art in Cape Town. Its running until 18 January if you still want to check it out. I really had a great time hanging out with my brother and Senyol! I got an amazing response from my work and about 700 people attended the exhibition and music event. It was pretty mind blowing for some one like me coming from a small city. Cape Town has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.
Word of Art Gallery
Some people enjoying the exhibition.
Its Bruce Mackay! Check out this artists work here.
I got to meet some of the people who brought some of my work. This is Jason from New York who is a professor in English.
This is Rowan who brought two of my paintings with his girl and Indigo from Canada. Rowan is a really talented filmaker who has just come back from America filming Freshly Ground on tour.
The awesome view from Senyol / Southey / Mackay studio in Woodstock. So rad!
