WESLEY VAN EEDEN BLOG

This weekend I got to show my work at Word of Art in Cape Town. Its running until 18 January if you still want to check it out. I really had a great time hanging out with my brother and Senyol! I got an amazing response from my work and about 700 people attended the exhibition and music event. It was pretty mind blowing for some one like me coming from a small city. Cape Town has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Word of Art Gallery

Some people enjoying the exhibition.

Its Bruce Mackay! Check out this artists work here.

I got to meet some of the people who brought some of my work. This is Jason from New York who is a professor in English.

This is Rowan who brought two of my paintings with his girl and Indigo from Canada. Rowan is a really talented filmaker who has just come back from America filming Freshly Ground on tour.

The awesome view from Senyol / Southey / Mackay studio in Woodstock. So rad!

I AM THALENTE VIDEO

This little trailer from Dig For Fire about Durban skater Thalente Biyela is so rad. Really beautifully shot and inspirational.

“Aptly named seventeen-year old Thalente Biyela which means Talent in Zulu is a homeless kid who aimlessly roamed downtown Durban until he was given his first skateboard by local skate store owner Dallas Oberholtzer in 2002.

Since then, he has become one of the most promising young skaters in his area. His deep trick bag makes Thalente one to watch at any session, be it at the concrete park – where he sometimes sleeps – or on urban terrain.

His charisma and charm have a way of drawing people towards him. He has spent the last four years on the streets hustling his way around the South African skate scene whilst trying to make a name for himself. He is motivated to use his skating talent as a tool to get him off the streets and make a career for himself. Skating is literally his life and he puts his heart and soul in the sport.

The future challenges facing Thalente are huge as he begins the journey from street kid to adult, fostering the dream of becoming one of the first black kids from South Africa to earn a living from skating”.

Check out more Thalent here.

RVCA GUITAR SHOW: SET-UP AND PARTY PHOTOS

If you were unlucky enough to have missed out on the opening of the RVCA Guitar Show, here is the full shebang in glorius RGB. Enjoy

Where else do you start other than with a blank canvas. Setting up.

Decisions and decisions.

Tools of the trade.

The ice tea has arrived. Thanks to Bos for being boss.

Seamus and Nicky fulfilling their roadie-dreams.

Getting there, getting there.

Meanwhile, outside, it was just business as usual in Long Street.

Khulu flips out while Kanya looks on calmly.

Back on the inside, things have started to come together nicely.

Lookin’ good.

Seamus getting all weird from the paint-fumes in the changing / games room.

Starting to look like a grassy-beach out there!

Um, yeah.

Peeling massive sheets of vinyl lettering apart for the window graphic.

Kenan from La.Vi testing the sound out whilst Seamus and Clayton wrestle with the vinyl.

Getting it up!

Smoothing the bubbles out.

These dudes deserve to look a little chuffed.

The first people started filing into the shop around 5:30

Homies getting their chill on.

Hi Jonny…

This lady was a little too stoked.

Chilling hard!

The guitars on the wall.

Jean De Wets’ guitar is suitably titled – Tropical Noodles – nice.

Filling up nicely.

Sonja from Sailor Jerry workin’ hard.

Crowds.

Freddy Sams’ mixed media smashed guitar piece.

The party spilled out onto the street nicely as the people kept on coming.

You are looking pretty damn good right there Cape Town.

Detail from Senyols’ Guitar

Reflections.

Jonny from La.Vi arbs around in the background whilst Kenan peruses the longboard section.

Who else but Haasbroek?

La.Vi looking happy on the hay!

Someone having a blinking contest with Daniel Ting Chong’s guitar.

La.Vi getting their groove on.

By now the poor little shop was way beyond capacity.

La.Vi are a great band who played a great set.

It looks like this lady has a hand coming out of her head. Weird.

That beer-can tried to steal Jamie’s bike. Luckily he was caught!

Mad detail on Greg Darroll aka Tokyo-Go-Go’s guitar.

Crowds enjoying La.Vi’s set.

Haasbroek having a go at the dart-board.

See all these empty cups? Rumour has it that eleven bottles of Sailor Jerry Rum were polished in the course of the evening.

Woah. The party of the night where things started to get all blurry and rad.

The guilty. That little lady ain’t as innocent as she looks.

James Brown himself actually made an appearance but declined comment.

This is where things went kinda full-mental. Good night!

Again a massive thank-you to RVCA, the ANP artists for making the amazing art, LA.VI for the rad tunes, Sailor Jerry and Bos for the tasty drinks and most importantly, a massive thanks to everyone who came to check out the art and party! Out!
