Incredible colour artwork by Japanese horror master Hideshi Hino includes three never-before-seen short manga stories, all in full-color. This volume includes: Memories of the Mermaid, which tells the tale of a magical encounter between a young boy and a mermaid girl. The Red Fruit is a disturbing story about the perils of eating a red fruit growing on a dead tree. Snow Flower is about a boy and his mother living alone in the mountains of Japan and the mother’s untimely death. Tormented by twisted spines, deformed eyes and mishapen bodies, Hino’s characters populate over 400 Hideshi Hino books.
Available from Revolution, Long Street, Cape Town.

What kind of art do you make and enjoy?
Mostly mixed media, and working on paper; really enjoy a good quality thick paper, watercolors, ink, pen, pencil, acrylic, spraypaint.
Other than that, what do you get up to in your free time?
Hang with friends, explore, ride bikes, spend time in forests, swimming in summer, west coast.
Who are some of your favourite artists?
Jean Michel Basquiat, Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Debuffet, Rauchenberg, Barry Mcgee, Anthony Lister.
Are there any particular things that inspire your work?
Nature, life experiences, mostly my work draws inspiration from shapes, lines and forms found in everyday life, minute details, scripture, conversations with friends, as well as an active relationship with God.
Do you have any projects lined up for 2011?
Currently working on an artist in residence program in Finland until the end of June. Joburg art fair, Studio show in July, Paper is You group exhibition in May, another group show in October, and anything interesting that pops up in between.
