LOUIS MINNAAR INTERVIEW
on May 11, 2011
Name: Louis Minnaar
Hometown: Pretoria
Favourite colour: I can’t choose. I like them all. Maybe a mixture – black…
What was your inspiration or the idea behind your Verb design?
Verb- well, love. The act of loving being the ultimate thing to do. The imagery depicts a little croc being rescued by a man. The man loves the awkward creature even though it has its flaws. You can pull it all together in the idea of a father son or God man relationship…
Could you briefly explain the process you went through in creating this work?
Pencil drawing, then ink, then digital tablet drawing work.
What music were you listening to while you were creating your graphics for the Verb range?
It might have been something like the Fountain soundtrack (Clint Mansell) or Thrice.
Did you have any formal art education, or are you self-taught?
Yes, I studied at the Open Window academy in PTA.
What sort of full-time work do you do currently? Are there any other projects you’re involved with at the moment?
Freelance. I am working on a couple of music videos, 2 exhibitions, an album, album covers and other random projects.
What sorts of mediums do you work in and what do you enjoy about it?
I like digital media- tablet drawing work. I like my art works to be as editable as possible.
Do you do anything else for fun other than making art?
I make electronic music and I really like drinking good full bodied coffee.
Who are some of the artist’s whose work you enjoy or take inspiration from?
Not anyone specific. I recently discovered Stefan Sagmeister- I like his mind.
How do you feel about being an artist living and working in South African?
I think that there is a danger of taking it very seriously and becoming wrapped up in myself (and the fickleness of the so called “art world”)- I just want to have fun and make cool things.
Do you have any websites or blogs that people interested in your work should check out?
