GARRETT HILL: FALLEN SA TOUR INTERVIEW
on October 26, 2011
How many years have you been skating and how did you get into it?
14 years. My older brother Gantry got me into skating. He got a board when he was 12 and I was 10. I wanted to do whatever he was into so I got one too and we’ve been skating ever since.
What has been the best part of your skate career so far?
Everyday is an accomplishment for me. I still to this day get to say that I’ve gotten to live out my dream since I was a kid. As hard as it is being a professional skateboarder my biggest accomplishment is getting to say that I’m still here doing what I love and what I was meant to do… And I’m not even close to being done.
How do you keep your cool during a skate comp?
The only thing you can really do is try and relax, block out all the pressure of the crowd and the cameras and other skaters and just try to do what you came there to do, and that’s skate as well as you can.
How was your time in SA?
Every Fallen tour has been amazing so far. I was overwhelmed at the hospitality we received in SA. The kids out there were just different. They had such a pure drive and passion for skating. Those were the most rewarding demos we’ve done so far I think.
Any good parties on the trip?
Everyday with the Fallen boys is a party to me.
How different is skate scene here compared to the States?
It really reminds me of how I started skating, in it’s most primitive form. It’s like finding a broken brick in the road and trying to learn flip tricks over it or trying to grind it. It’s making the best out of what you got out there and that’s the rawest kind of skating there is. They don’t have the luxury of going to perfect, smooth outdoor parks like we do in the States. Those kids skate the grit and the grime and love it and I respect them for that and can only hope they know how much motivation that’s brought to me.
Do you see any great local skateboarding while you were here?
I can honestly say that there’s so many rough diamonds out there that I’d be shocked if soon people from SA don’t make it into major U.S. skate magazines.
Check out a full Fallen SA Tour feature in the upcoming Session Magazine and AV Skateboarding DVD, dropping soon! Thanks to Rudi Jeggle for the photo.

Billy, Slash and Tommy went home today and after the airport drop-off we hit up Table Mountain and Civic Centre, ending it all off with a sunset at Mouille Point. Tomorrow we all fly out to Maloof. It’s been the best tour, make sure you catch the next Session and AV for full tour articles!

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 10
on September 27, 2011
Monday was the last day of the Fallen tour and we spent it driving around Cape Town trying to find workable spots. It was super tough finding the right places though ‘cos everything here is rough as hell, but still a good day. Billy, Tommy and Brian head back out to the States today and everyone else heads out to Maloof tomorrow.

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 9
on September 26, 2011
The Shed was the last demo of the Fallen SA Tour. People are always hyped out there and yesterdays demo was definitely the best one out there yet. We checked out some street spots in Stellenbosch afterwards and Tommy got maced in the face by a retarded security guard while trying to skate at the mall near Mystic Boer. He still managed to hit up two spots after that and killed it.

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 8
on September 26, 2011
Today we literally had to go straight to the Sport Unlimited demo from the airport, after arriving in Cape Town from Durban. We stopped in at Civic and then checked into the Protea Fire and Ice Hotel, pimp spot with an amazing view of Table Mountain. The AV screening was going down at Rafikis, so we went down to that and Billy got some beer pong started. The rest of the night was partying on Long Street and Billy and Tommy got hand-pocked tattoos by Tyler B Murphy until 5am.

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 7
on September 26, 2011
Checked out a bunch of rad spots in Durban today. We hit up the stadium, which was smooth as hell and had tons of school kids around who were hyped on rolling on our boards and playing soccer. We hit up the House of Curries and then down to Revolution Pavilion for the demo. Good times.

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 6
on September 23, 2011
Super good day today hitting up Durban street spots. Started with the beach front, then hit up a rail, then off to the Big 3. After that Dlamini got us lost for half an hour looking for a rail spot that no one wanted to skate, haha. Checked out Westville University around sunset and then hit up Hooters for some chicken wings and jugs of beer.
