JOURNEY THROUGH AFRICA: DAY 7 – 9

A group of skateboarders from Germany and South Africa made an unusual and long journey through the country. Together with Revolution, they collected boards, shoes and clothing to hand-out to kids within the poorer areas between Cape Town, Durban and Johannesburg. Fourteen days of driving and over 4000 km with Justus Kotzé, Niklas Speer von Cappeln, Louis Taubert, photographers Andrea de Souto and Sam Clark. Cinematographer Lucas Fiederling documented the journey, the countryside and of course the skateboarding…

Day 7: Coffee Bay. The Rain didn’t want us to leave Coffee Bay.

Sam chilling with a new friend.

So everyone decided to stay another night and enjoy a really good party!

The Justus show.

Day 8: Staying another night was definitely a good choice. We wouldn’t have made it, because the roads had been flooded.

Louis enjoying sleeping with his pillow.

Before the Birdsnakes…

…and the Nikdeer hit the road to Durban.

Day 9: Durban!

We arrived safely!

Even though Justus wasn’t keen to drive anymore.

We had a fun skate at Durban’s beachfront skatepark. Switching jobs – while cinematographer Lucas and photographer Sam kill the transitions.

Be sure to check back tomorrow for more action and photos from The Journey Through South Africa…If you missed Day 1 to 3, you can check it out here and you can see the action from Days 4 to 6 over here.

WESLEY VAN EEDEN BLOG

This weekend I got to show my work at Word of Art in Cape Town. Its running until 18 January if you still want to check it out. I really had a great time hanging out with my brother and Senyol! I got an amazing response from my work and about 700 people attended the exhibition and music event. It was pretty mind blowing for some one like me coming from a small city. Cape Town has got to be one of the most beautiful places in the world.

Word of Art Gallery

Some people enjoying the exhibition.

Its Bruce Mackay! Check out this artists work here.

I got to meet some of the people who brought some of my work. This is Jason from New York who is a professor in English.

This is Rowan who brought two of my paintings with his girl and Indigo from Canada. Rowan is a really talented filmaker who has just come back from America filming Freshly Ground on tour.

The awesome view from Senyol / Southey / Mackay studio in Woodstock. So rad!

I AM THALENTE VIDEO

This little trailer from Dig For Fire about Durban skater Thalente Biyela is so rad. Really beautifully shot and inspirational.

“Aptly named seventeen-year old Thalente Biyela which means Talent in Zulu is a homeless kid who aimlessly roamed downtown Durban until he was given his first skateboard by local skate store owner Dallas Oberholtzer in 2002.

Since then, he has become one of the most promising young skaters in his area. His deep trick bag makes Thalente one to watch at any session, be it at the concrete park – where he sometimes sleeps – or on urban terrain.

His charisma and charm have a way of drawing people towards him. He has spent the last four years on the streets hustling his way around the South African skate scene whilst trying to make a name for himself. He is motivated to use his skating talent as a tool to get him off the streets and make a career for himself. Skating is literally his life and he puts his heart and soul in the sport.

The future challenges facing Thalente are huge as he begins the journey from street kid to adult, fostering the dream of becoming one of the first black kids from South Africa to earn a living from skating”.

Check out more Thalent here.

BROADCASTS EXHIBITION

Society for hundreds of years have been obsessed with images and how things are presented from the outside. We take a closer look by asking people from around the world a couple questions and then illustrate what they have told us. It’s like creating a VISUAL MOUTHPIECE for the people we meet. The idea was created by illustrator / designer / artist Wesley van Eeden from Durban, South Africa. The project’s focus is to paint and illustrate peoples points of view from around the world. Exploring themes such as where people get their hope, what are their dreams, what would they like to change in their town and what makes them happy. It aims to encourage dialog between different people and cultures and to give the person on the street the chance to tell the world how they feel about the fundamental issues of life.

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 7

Checked out a bunch of rad spots in Durban today. We hit up the stadium, which was smooth as hell and had tons of school kids around who were hyped on rolling on our boards and playing soccer. We hit up the House of Curries and then down to Revolution Pavilion for the demo. Good times.

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 6

Super good day today hitting up Durban street spots. Started with the beach front, then hit up a rail, then off to the Big 3. After that Dlamini got us lost for half an hour looking for a rail spot that no one wanted to skate, haha. Checked out Westville University around sunset and then hit up Hooters for some chicken wings and jugs of beer.

FALLEN TOUR BLOG DAY 5

We spent the day driving from Joburg out to Durban. The drive pretty much consisted of rad music mixes and dorking out, talking about skate video soundtracks and video parts. When we got into Durban it was dark and rainy as hell, so we hit up the pool hall with Dlamini and called it a night. Durban street skate tomorrow… it’s on.
