Punk is most commonly associated with music, fashion and graphics, but its rebellious and iconoclastic spirit also found expression in the visual arts. “Panic Attack!” explores British and American art between 1974 and 1984, a period not only of economic and social crisis but also of remarkable cultural energy, when art became increasingly politicized just as society at large was moving towards conservatism.

Many of the artists featured were part of a dynamic interdisciplinary scene that embraced both art and music, producing work that was sometimes confrontational or angry, but always fiercely independent and intelligent. This work is a vibrant and powerful visual account of an exciting, innovative period in British and American art. It features the work of 30 leading artists, among them Gilbert & George, Nan Goldin, Derek Jarman and Robert Mapplethorpe. It highlights the burning artistic concerns that defined the spirit of the punk years.

A cunning group of street artists is appropriating public spaces with astonishing artistic interventions. ‘We Come at Night’ introduces the work of thirteen street artists whose artistic interventions are not only aesthetically motivated but also function as razor-sharp social, political and ironic commentary on its surroundings. Featured artists include Akim One Machine, Blu, Brom, Dr. Innocent, JR, Kami & Sasu, Mare 139, Mr. Horse, Nina, Nixfitti, Os Gemeos, Zasd and Zevs. The book contains a DVD with a film documentary by Volker Sattel and Mario Mentrup about the Outsides project initiated by Red Bull.

Graffiti and unsanctioned art; from local origins to global phenomenon.

In recent years street art has grown bolder, more ornate, more sophisticated and—in many cases—more acceptable. Yet unsanctioned public art remains the problem child of cultural expression, the last outlaw of visual disciplines. It has also become a global phenomenon of the 21st century. Made in collaboration with featured artists, Trespass examines the rise and global reach of graffiti and urban art, tracing key figures, events and movements of self-expression in the city’s social space, and the history of urban reclamation, protest, and illicit performance. The first book to present the full historical sweep, global reach and technical developments of the street art movement, Trespass features key works by 150 artists, and connects four generations of visionary outlaws including Jean Tinguely, Spencer Tunick, Keith Haring, Os Gemeos, Jenny Holzer, Barry McGee, Gordon Matta-Clark, Shepard Fairey, Blu, Billboard Liberation Front, Guerrilla Girls and Banksy, among others. It also includes dozens of previously unpublished photographs of long-lost works and legendary, ephemeral urban artworks.

Also includes:

• Unpublished images of street art by Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat
• Unpublished photographs by Subway Art luminary Martha Cooper
• Unpublished photos from the personal archives of selected artists
• Incisive essays by Anne Pasternak (director of public arts fund Creative Time) and civil rights lawyer Tony Serra
• Special feature: exclusive preface by Banksy

Trek is David Carson’s first graphic design book in the past five years. Along with his latest photographic feats, it features film and web work and brilliant new designs created for illustrious clients such as Nine Inch Nails and Quiksilver. Also included is a selection of designs David has created at workshops conducted in countries all over the world.

With Trek, David Carson is deftly shuffling the deck, bridging the elusive gaps between several different genres.
In 1989 Marc McKee got his start creating skateboard graphics for World Industries and many of its subsidiaries, like Blind, 101, Menace, A-Team and Almost. Spearheaded by McKee, this era is considered the golden age of skateboard art, whose funny, sexy and offensive graphics were hugely popular then and are considered highly collectable today. McKee was also the editor of Big Brother Magazine during its first four years and later worked on the Blunt Snowboard Magazine, before selling both to Larry Flynt Publications. Today, McKee continues to make art for skateboard companies.

Incredible colour artwork by Japanese horror master Hideshi Hino includes three never-before-seen short manga stories, all in full-color. This volume includes: Memories of the Mermaid, which tells the tale of a magical encounter between a young boy and a mermaid girl. The Red Fruit is a disturbing story about the perils of eating a red fruit growing on a dead tree. Snow Flower is about a boy and his mother living alone in the mountains of Japan and the mother’s untimely death. Tormented by twisted spines, deformed eyes and mishapen bodies, Hino’s characters populate over 400 Hideshi Hino books.

The Horror! The Horror! uncovers a rare treasury of some of the most important and neglected stories in American literature – the pre-Code horror comics of the 1950s. These outrageous comic book images, censored by Congress in an infamous televised U.S. Senate subcommittee investigating juvenile delinquency in 1954, have rarely been seen since they were first published – and are revealed once again in all of their eye-popping glory. Jim Trombetta, in his commentary and informative text, provides a detailed history and context for these stories and their creators, spinning a tale of horror and government censorship as scary as the stories themselves.

There is a bonus DVD in the book called Confidential File, a rare 25-minute TV show that first aired on October 9, 1955, about the “evils” of comic books and their effect on juvenile delinquency.

Cute little kittens, angels, and babies? Flowers, ice cream cones, and German boy bands? Coming from, supposedly, the creepiest and most pessimistic artist of his generation? Yes indeed, there is a “sweeter side” to R. Crumb. These delectable illustrations wonderfully exemplify the many tender moments that have, until now, played second fiddle to the cult icon’s raunchier sketches. Showcasing evocative haunting images of people and places, including his wife Aline, his daughter Sophie, scenes from the village where he resides in the South of France, and the Blues musicians he treasures from his 78rpm record collection.

From its origins in American workwear, via west coast subcultures, extreme sports and subsequent commercialism, streetwear has become »

From its origins in American workwear, via west coast subcultures, extreme sports and subsequent commercialism, streetwear has become to fashion as hip-hop has to music: a global phenomenon. Incorporating cultural codes of dress, the best in graphic design, as well as exemplary brand-building – the products not of corporate giants but cottage/tenement industries – the leading streetwear brands have become influential beyond the sphere of fashion alone. Streetwear may form a fundamental look for out-of-office-hours dress for teenagers and middle youth alike, but its leading lights have connections with the worlds of art, advertising, music and interiors that make them as potent as ‘designer’ brands many times their size.

Showcasing over 30 of the most exciting and – importantly – pioneering of streetwear brands, this book focuses not on the endless me-too labels, but those that have shaped the market since the late 1980s. Cult Streetwear tells the stories of the people behind the brands – from entrepreneurs to graffiti writers, DJs to surf dudes to sneaker nuts, from LA to NYC, London to Berlin and Tokyo. It explores each brand’s cultural resonance, and explains why so many have gained a cult following while continuing to break new ground in a market with unlimited scope for innovation.
