DOUBLE ADAPTER INTERVIEW

Eat You Alive is your first Original song for Double Adapter, any plans for more original music? Not that your fans don’t love your Metallica mash up…

T: Yes, definitely plans for more 100% original material – it’s going to be a big focus for the new year, so I guess that’s my resolution in a way.

Please complete the following statement: A good music video is never complete without a…

T: Zombie! Haha, no. I would say without a good concept…Concept is everything. It doesn’t have to be shiny and high budget to impress with a good concept.

D: I would say hot girls and some form of liquid.

What inspired the music video? How do you feel you contributed a creative twist to the Zombie motif?

T: The music video was inspired by a friend that I work with, who was also the director of the video – Matthew Stonier. He’s a horror fanatic so Zombies come naturally to him. I’m not sure I directly contributed to the Zombie motif, other than of course producing the music and working closely with make up and wardrobe to find the exact look that we wanted!

D: We can’t take much credit for it ourselves, but as a enthusiast of everything Zombie, I think Matthew totally put in a twist on it that I haven’t seen in another Zombie film.

The rumour mill has it that the die hard fans were eating the raw meat off the floors by the end of the filming. What does that mean to you guys?

T: They totally were in some shots! Awesome! It means a lot to us, we never started Double Adapter for fans, we just really enjoyed it. The fact that 2 years down the line someone would eat raw meat for us in a music video is pretty mindblowing. Thanks guys!

D: Yeah, I wouldn’t mess with our fans, they are pretty bad ass! Totally the best!

There are also reports that the zombies on set were so enthused that they broke through the barrier in front of the stage during a forward surge. That must have been terrifying?

T: That actually was pretty terrifying. 100 zombies charging a stage and pushing it back by about a meter was something else… They actually snapped metal pins off crowd control barriers! High five for zombie power.

D: I was actually facing them, I’ve never been so terrified in my entire life. I had to go outside for a couple of minutes and calm my nerves.

The lead role in Eat You Alive’s music video was played by a very attractive Miss Jay Anstey who comes from a vegetarian and animal rights background. How did she react to all the meat she had to deal with?

T: Jay was totally pro about the whole thing. We were concerned she’d immediately turn down the role based on the concept of the video, but I think luckily she’s a good enough actress to put herself into a character and not bring her personal beliefs into the game. She was doing some seriously crazy stuff with that meat… the crew even got grossed out before her.

D: Yeah, Jay is a real trooper! I’ve seen Jay get creeped out in a supermarket by meat, so the fact that she did that is a testament to her acting talent.

There have been comparisons made between Locnville and Double Adapter in the SA media – which of you represents which one of them?

T: Well, now, we’d love to comment but who ON EARTH can tell the difference between those guys? We actually like them a lot, they’re friendly professional guys and they deserve their success. As for a comparison, keep ‘em coming, but to be honest, we’re more of an evil version.

D: Yeah I could not tell you which is which to save my life. I would have to say that I am the slightly more attractive one.

What was the sense in your jumping into a teeming crowd of Zombies, come now – don’t you know that shit is crazy? Eek!

T: That shit is MOST DEFINITELY crazy. Luckily for us, we had an excellent Zombie wrangler on set, and these were trained Zombies. I wouldn’t try the same stunt with wild zombies.

D: It was zombicide! I did ruin my white suit though and some actually bit me!

Please tell us a little about the costumes on set for Eat You Alive. Sam Constable was also one of the Elle New Talent finalists in 2011, do you plan to work with her for any of your live sets?

T: Sam is a good friend of ours, and her work is really excellent. We would LOVE to work with her on the look for band in 2012 – we’ll see how it goes! And if you like the outfits in the video, make sure to check out her line, Constable.

The make up on set was convincing and truly gruesome, how big was the team of artists and how long did the average zombie take to become a zombie?

T: Our team was headed up by Julia Rubinstein and Amy Anstey (Jay Anstey’s sister), and the full team was about 10 artists, and two wardrobe ladies. The process was a production line and took between 20 minutes for a zombie extra up to about 45 minutes for a full blown featured zombie.

How do you guys stay down to earth amidst all this publicity?

T: It’s not easy. haha, just kidding. Like I said earlier, we aren’t doing this for publicity – we do it because most of the time, it’s a lot of fun. I think we usually think of it less like publicity and more like recognition – so it’s nice to know that people are recognising the work we’re doing. And if that translates to more people coming to party with us at shows, then it’s been a success. I think we also have to keep things in perspective… we’re not the BIGGEST act in SA by a long shot… but we do aim to be one of the most fun ones!

D: It’s never been about getting famous for us and it will continue to be that way. We just want people to have the most amount fun that they can. After the show come on over, say hi, and let’s have a shot!
